How to Name Your System — The Power of System Naming

Designing systems starts with vision, but it takes shape through language. Once we map the system, the next challenge is figuring out how to talk about it and what to call it. That’s where 𝗦𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺𝘀 𝗡𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴 comes in.

Hello again, fellow #Intrapreneurs 👋 Welcome back to our #DesignThinking Series! Last time, we zoomed out with 𝗦𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺𝘀 𝗠𝗮𝗽𝘀— how problems don’t exist in isolation, but as part of a bigger web. 🕸️ Today, we’re building on that idea with something powerful but often overlooked: 𝗦𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺𝘀 𝗡𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴.

👏 Big thanks to Megan Brown and Sonia Uwamahoro for driving the #GoodDesign conversation. ⸻ Once you 𝑠𝑒𝑒 the system 𝐡𝐨𝐰 𝐝𝐨 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐭𝐚𝐥𝐤 𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐢𝐭? What do you call it so that everyone is speaking the same language?

👉 𝑵𝒂𝒎𝒆𝒔 𝒔𝒉𝒂𝒑𝒆 𝒕𝒉𝒊𝒏𝒌𝒊𝒏𝒈. Call something a “scheduling problem,” and you’ll focus on calendars. Call it a “coordination challenge,” and suddenly, communication, priorities, and team norms are on the table. Same system. Different name. Completely different solutions.

𝗦𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺𝘀 𝗡𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴 matters because words are frames. A name can open up new possibilities… or it can shut them down. And when we land on a clear, thoughtful name, it helps everyone share the same understanding of the challenge. 🔤 Words = frames. 🌱 A good name opens possibility. 🤝 Shared naming builds shared understanding.

Of course, there are traps... 🚫 We often default to tech-heavy terms that miss the human side. 🚫 Or we name the symptom, like ‘𝑙𝑎𝑡𝑒 𝑒𝑚𝑎𝑖𝑙𝑠’, instead of the broader system. 🚫 And sometimes, one person’s perspective ends up shaping the entire name — which leaves others out of the picture

So what makes a good name? It's: ⚖️ 𝗡𝗲𝘂𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗹 → avoids blame. 🔍 𝗗𝗲𝘀𝗰𝗿𝗶𝗽𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 → points to the system, not just a part. ✨ 𝗜𝗻𝘃𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 → sparks curiosity, not resistance.

We get there with a few simple practices. Start by gathering perspectives from across the system. Ask: ‘𝘞𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘦𝘭𝘴𝘦 𝘤𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘥 𝘸𝘦 𝘤𝘢𝘭𝘭 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘴?’ Test the names: do they open up thinking or narrow it down? And keep refining until the language feels #Clear, #Flexible, and shared. 🗣️ Collect perspectives. 🔁 Ask questions 🎯 Test: does it open up or narrow down thinking? 📝 Refine until it feels both clear + flexible.

Here’s a quick exercise. 🔎Think of a challenge you’re facing right now. ✏️Write down what you currently call it. 💡Try renaming it in broader, system-oriented terms. You might be surprised how quickly the conversation — and the possible solutions — shift. 👀
