How to Name Your System โ€” The Power of System Naming

Designing systems starts with vision, but it takes shape through language. Once we map the system, the next challenge is figuring out how to talk about it and what to call it. Thatโ€™s where ๐—ฆ๐˜†๐˜€๐˜๐—ฒ๐—บ๐˜€ ๐—ก๐—ฎ๐—บ๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด comes in.

Hello again, fellow #Intrapreneurs ๐Ÿ‘‹ Welcome back to our #DesignThinking Series! Last time, we zoomed out with ๐—ฆ๐˜†๐˜€๐˜๐—ฒ๐—บ๐˜€ ๐— ๐—ฎ๐—ฝ๐˜€โ€” how problems donโ€™t exist in isolation, but as part of a bigger web. ๐Ÿ•ธ๏ธ Today, weโ€™re building on that idea with something powerful but often overlooked: ๐—ฆ๐˜†๐˜€๐˜๐—ฒ๐—บ๐˜€ ๐—ก๐—ฎ๐—บ๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด.

๐Ÿ‘ Big thanks to Megan Brown and Sonia Uwamahoro for driving the #GoodDesign conversation. โธป Once you ๐‘ ๐‘’๐‘’ the system ๐ก๐จ๐ฐ ๐๐จ ๐ฒ๐จ๐ฎ ๐ญ๐š๐ฅ๐ค ๐š๐›๐จ๐ฎ๐ญ ๐ข๐ญ? What do you call it so that everyone is speaking the same language?

Call something a โ€œscheduling problem,โ€ and youโ€™ll focus on calendars. Call it a โ€œcoordination challenge,โ€ and suddenly, communication, priorities, and team norms are on the table. Same system. Different name. Completely different solutions.

๐—ฆ๐˜†๐˜€๐˜๐—ฒ๐—บ๐˜€ ๐—ก๐—ฎ๐—บ๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด matters because words are frames. A name can open up new possibilitiesโ€ฆ or it can shut them down. And when we land on a clear, thoughtful name, it helps everyone share the same understanding of the challenge. ๐Ÿ”ค Words = frames. ๐ŸŒฑ A good name opens possibility. ๐Ÿค Shared naming builds shared understanding.

Of course, there are traps... ๐Ÿšซ We often default to tech-heavy terms that miss the human side. ๐Ÿšซ Or we name the symptom, like โ€˜๐‘™๐‘Ž๐‘ก๐‘’ ๐‘’๐‘š๐‘Ž๐‘–๐‘™๐‘ โ€™, instead of the broader system. ๐Ÿšซ And sometimes, one personโ€™s perspective ends up shaping the entire name โ€” which leaves others out of the picture

So what makes a good name? It's: โš–๏ธ ๐—ก๐—ฒ๐˜‚๐˜๐—ฟ๐—ฎ๐—น โ†’ avoids blame. ๐Ÿ” ๐——๐—ฒ๐˜€๐—ฐ๐—ฟ๐—ถ๐—ฝ๐˜๐—ถ๐˜ƒ๐—ฒ โ†’ points to the system, not just a part. โœจ ๐—œ๐—ป๐˜ƒ๐—ถ๐˜๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด โ†’ sparks curiosity, not resistance.

We get there with a few simple practices. Start by gathering perspectives from across the system. โ€™ Test the names: do they open up thinking or narrow it down? And keep refining until the language feels #Clear, #Flexible, and shared. ๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ Collect perspectives. ๐Ÿ” Ask questions ๐ŸŽฏ Test: does it open up or narrow down thinking? ๐Ÿ“ Refine until it feels both clear + flexible.

Hereโ€™s a quick exercise. ๐Ÿ”ŽThink of a challenge youโ€™re facing right now. โœ๏ธWrite down what you currently call it. ๐Ÿ’กTry renaming it in broader, system-oriented terms. You might be surprised how quickly the conversation โ€” and the possible solutions โ€” shift. ๐Ÿ‘€

โœจ ๐—ฆ๐˜†๐˜€๐˜๐—ฒ๐—บ๐˜€ ๐— ๐—ฎ๐—ฝ๐˜€ helped us see the web. ๐Ÿ•ธ๏ธ #SystemsNaming helps us find the language to navigate it. ๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ The words we choose donโ€™t just describe the system โ€” they help design it.
